Seeing with "Heart" Eyes
"Let the heart of those who seek the Lord be glad. - 1 Chronicles 16:10" (p. 23)
"I am convinced that David's story shows us a life that can be danced and celebrated by everyday people like me and you. With 'heart' eyes, we learn to see God's power. . . David danced before the Lord with all of his heart because he loved God; his dance poured out of the overflow of his relationship with God. . . David did not base his joy on his circumstances but on his perception of God's daily companionship. And his inner life and love for God grew stronger. . . " (pp.24-25, 27)
"Then David spoke to the chiefs of the Levites to appoint their relatives the singers, with instruments of music, harps, lyres, loud-sounding cymbals, to raise sounds of joy. -1 Chronicles 15:16" (p. 27)
"'You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever' (Psalm 16:11). . . David's response to this truth was not based on his circumstances, his battles, or his works but on knowing his God in and through the battles and victories of his life, and so dancing and celebration came as a result. He wasn't just acting joyful; loving God and seeing him with the eyes of his heart truly made David joyful. . . " (p. 32)
"David's dance points the way to true, foundational, unchanging joy. His heart was indeed different. It was not focused on his circumstances or on the difficulties that had plagued his life, nor was his focus on pleasing others or fitting into their expectations. Instead he demonstrated single-minded concentration on the never-ending, living Source of joy - the Lord God himself. God, not distant, above in some remote heavenly place, but God real, present, involved in the earthly moments of life. . . In God, and him only, can we find joy, understand joy, remain in joy, and celebrate life each day with our hearts filled. . . " (p. 33)
"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music." -Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche (p. 37)
"Clearly joy is an issue of the heart. Joy is not found in performing for people or in doing all the right things for God. Nor is joy in the absence of difficulties or problems. Joy is found in the presence of God in the midst of all circumstances, in delighting in the life he has given." (p. 39)
"Dear heavenly Father,
I long to live freely in your joy. I want to love you with all my heart, for all the days of my life. Please meet me at my point of need. Show me your reality and heal my heart of any wrong ideas about you. Take away the burden of striving, so that I may enjoy each day, really knowing the reality of your presence. I love you, Lord. Amen." (p. 44)
