God's Word is Food for our Growth.

The first step to going on a trip is deciding where you want to go. In life’s journey we really want to be on the road with Jesus headed for Heaven.

Once we know where we want to go, next we need to know how to get there.

A map can help us get to where we are going. It shows us the roads we need to take through a city or state to get where we want to go. If we get lost, we can look at the map to help us find our way back to the right road. Just like a road map can help us find our way to our destination, God has given us a road map to help us find our way on the highway of life. It is the Bible.

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” In Bible times, the people didn’t have bright street lamps like we do today. They would have to carry little clay dishes that had oil in them. The light from these wasn’t very bright and only illuminated the path one step at a time. This is like our life’s journey. Walking on the road with Jesus isn‘t always easy. We will not always see the whole route ahead of us. But by reading, studying and obeying God’s Word, we will be shown the next step we are to take, and eventually, we will arrive where God wants us to be. It’s good to know we have such a good map to help us on our life’s journey.

After going all night without eating, our stomachs are empty and need to be filled up. Going without food is called fasting. When we eat breakfast we are breaking the fast of the night. That’s how breakfast got its name.

Being hungry can feel uncomfortable. Without food to give us energy we feel tired. It is hard to concentrate on things.Food is important for our bodies. Eating healthy meals helps us to have energy and strength, helps us to concentrate and helps our bodies to grow and work properly.

Just like we need food for our physical bodies, we also need food for our spiritual journey.

We can  be “nourished” by the Word of God. Matthew 4:4 says, “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Jesus said these words when Satan was trying to tempt Him to disobey God. In our life’s journey if we choose not to follow God’s will, we will sin. Remember that sin is doing anything that takes us away from God. Jesus showed us here in Matthew that He would trust God to meet His needs instead of doing things His own way. By reading and studying the Bible, we can learn how God wants us to live. This will help us when we are tempted to sin.

In Hebrews 5:13-14, it says “Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” For those who are just getting acquainted with Jesus this verse is saying that the Word of God is like milk to you as you are just learning about who Jesus is and what He has done for you. For the one who has been on the road with Jesus for a while, you are ready for the “meat” or solid food of the Bible. This means you should be reading and studying the Bible on your own everyday and starting to apply it to your life. As we feed on the Word of God we will grow in our knowledge. As we apply the Word to our lives, we will exercise our spiritual body and begin to become more like Jesus, better able to understand what the right thing to do is and how to keep from being tempted to do the wrong thing. I hope you will all begin to hunger for the Word of God!

The Bible is like a map and food. The Bible will light our path so we know which way to go. When we read and study the Bible, God’s Word will help us to make right choices and to grow to be more like Jesus.

Thank you, God, for your Word that teaches us how to live in a way that pleases you. Help us to hunger for your Word everyday. Help us to be obedient to your Word by applying it to our lives. May we grow to be more like You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
