I Believe

Today my kids and I learned about the Apostle's Creed. We read that around A.D. 150 "Christians felt it necessary to write out the basis of their faith. . . The Apostle's Creed was written by early Christians for several reasons. It was used at the baptism of new Christians to confirm what they believe. It was probably used to teach others about Christianity, and it certainly helped bring the churches together. The Apostle's Creed was undoubtedly memorized in the Early Church and then taught on deeper levels. It would have been like a curriculum for a new believers' class. And of great importance, the Apostle's Creed served as an anchor for early Christians who were persecuted. In other words, the creed may have helped Christians understand what they were dying for if indeed they were put to death for their faith." -p. 57; The Mystery of History Volume II; Linda Lacour Hobar

Apostle's Creed

I BELIEVE in God Almighty
And in Christ Jesus, his only Son, our Lord
Who was born of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
Who was crucified under Pontius Pilate
and was buried
And the third day rose from the dead
Who ascended into heaven
And sitteth on the right hand of the Father
Whence He cometh to judge the living and the dead.
And in the Holy Spirit
The holy church
The remission of sins
The resurrection of the flesh
The life everlasting

This reminded me of Newsboy's song "We Believe". The band says this song is a creed, a statement of faith. I so agree!

Another thing we have learned about in history is the Nicene Creed. Constantine I invited 300 bishops to discuss the serious differences in beliefs. The result was the Nicene Creed.

"Similar to the Apostle's Creed, it states exactly what Christians believe to be the truth about Jesus Christ. In summary, it states that Jesus is God, not just similar to God." -Mystery of History Volume II; p. 571

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of all things,

Both visible and invisible;

And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Son of God,

Only begotten of the Father, that is to say, of the substance of the Father,

God of God and Light of Light, very God of very God,

Begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father,

By whom all things were made,

Both things in heaven and things on earth;

Who, for us men and for our salvation,

Came down and was made flesh,

Was made man, suffered, and rose again on the third day,

Went up into the heavens,

And is to come again to judge both the quick and the dead;

And in the Holy Ghost.
