"Everything is Awesome" about the Lego Movie

The weekend The Lego Movie came out, Josh was invited to see it with a few other boys for his friend's birthday. We, along with two other families, crashed the party and stayed to watch it too. We all left saying, "This was the best movie ever!" Besides the fact that we are Lego fans, the movie had some really great messages.

One of the greatest messages centered around Emmet. He was a Lego representative of Christ. Like Jesus, a prophet foretold of his coming; he was called "The Special" (chosen one); Emmet sacrificed himself for the others; and he came back (from the dead). Emmet had the same mindset of Christ, he became a servant to the other Master Builders and humbled himself - even unto death (Philippians 2:5-8) Dennis reminded us that C.S.Lewis said the story of Christ was the greatest story ever told. This is why he wrote the "Chronicles of Narnia". I would venture to say this is why we have seen this theme retold in various ways over and over.

The other important message was about fathers spending time with their sons (kids). In his Old Testament commentary, Warren Wiersbe writes, "Children are rewards not punishments, opportunities not obstacles. They aren’t burdens; they’re investments that produce dividends. . . The Christian husband is to nourish his wife and his children by sharing love and encouragement in the Lord. It is not enough to nurture children physically by providing food, shelter, and clothing. He must also nurture them emotionally and spiritually." This takes time - intentional, purposeful time. It took the Lego play of a boy to get his dad to see that his priorities were in the wrong place. This was such a "no way" moment and yet, the clues were there all along!

There was also the importance of teamwork and using your unique gifts together. When the Master Builders were all trying to do their own thing, nothing was really getting accomplished. We are reminded in Romans 12:4-6 that we each have different gifts to use for the good of all. Once the Master Builders learned to share their ideas and work together, they were able to make progress. The movie's song says "everything is awesome when you're part of a team"!

And finally, while there are times that we need to follow instructions, we also should not be afraid to be creative. There is a place for both.

This movie was a lot of fun and is one we will want to own when it becomes available on DVD.
