Leaving a Spiritual Heritage
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. Always remember these commands I give you today. Teach them to your children, and talk about them when you sit at home and walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. -Deuteronomy 6:5-7
. . . Pay careful attention to all the words I have said to you today, and command your children to obey carefully everything in these teachings. -Deuteronomy 32:46
The good people who live honest lives will be a blessing to their children. -Proverbs 20:7
Train your children how to live right, and when they are old, they will not change. -Proverbs 22:6
A father should tell his children that you provide help. -Isaiah 38:19
Fathers, do not make your children angry, but raise them with the training and teaching of the Lord. -Ephesians 6:4
But you should continue following the teachings you learned. You know they are true, because you trust those who taught you. Since you were a child you have known the Holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise. And that wisdom leads to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. -2 Timothy 3:14-15
Have you ever thought about what you are going to leave behind when you die? Most people think in terms of possessions - property, money, stocks and bonds, and so forth. But let's think in terms of what kind of spiritual heritage, what kind of lifestyle, what kind of understanding of who God is and of what the Scriptures say will be your legacy?
You may say, "Wait a minute. You can't give someone else your faith. That is something everyone has to experience on a personal basis. You can't really give your faith away." You cannot give away your experience, I admit, but you can hand down your faith. You can leave your sense of moral values, your understanding of the principles of Scripture, those principles of the Word of God that have guided you and led you as you made your decisions in life. . .
If you are a godly parent, look at what you have to give to your children. You may not be able to leave them even a small amount of money but if you have loved God and practiced the principles of Scripture, if you have loved your children and listened to them, you will leave them a faith to sustain them through every difficulty, every heartache, and every trial of lie.
My challenge to you is to build a strong Christian home. If you will purpose to do so, you will keep your kids on your team.
