Overcoming Anger

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.
-Ephesians 4:31-32

Some thoughts on these verses:

Bitterness develops over time as we nurse our anger and tell ourselves we have a good cause to be angry.

Rage means "to boil". It is outbursts of anger.

Anger is a held attitude with the purpose of revenge.

Brawling/Clamor is loud angry words.

Slander is speaking evil about someone to someone else who has no need to hear it.

Malice is wickedness or ill will towards another person.

Face up to your bitterness and anger as sin and confess it to God, asking His forgiveness. Accept responsibility for your sin rather than blame others.

Replace bitterness and anger with kindness, compassion and forgiveness. We are new creatures in Christ and have been taught a new way of life. We are to put off the old man and put on the new man in Christ.

Kindness is a fruit of the Spirit. A kind person is not harsh or sharp. He takes an interest in others and tries to understand them.

Compassion means to have genuine concern for another person's well-being.

Instead of holding a grudge and letting bitterness grow in us, we are to forgive those who have
wronged us. Forgiveness is undeserved favor. To forgive is to show grace. If a person has to earn your forgiveness, or if you bring it up every time there is a disagreement or it doesn't cost you anything, than it's not forgiveness.

Remember how God in Christ has forgiven you: by grace, not works; at great cost; forgiven you more than you can forgive anyone else.

Practical steps to apply these verses:

1) Receive God's forgiveness for yourself.

2) Be humbled by God's grace daily

3) Live a changed life. Be careful of the media you partake in; Spend time in God's Word daily, memorizing Scripture

4) Pray for the person who has wronged you

5) Confess your anger

6) Ask for the help of the Holy Spirit to control your mind and emotions
