Fuel Up with the Holy Spirit

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.” John 14:26

Once we decide to get on the road with Jesus, we discover that the Bible is like a road map for our journey; helping us to live in a way that pleases God. If we spend time in the Word everyday, we will grow to be more like Jesus.

A car needs gasoline in order to work. In order for you to keep going, you have to fill the tank up. Well, just like our physical bodies need food for energy, and cars need gasoline in order to go, our spiritual bodies need a kind of fuel too.

This "fuel" is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us wisdom and energy for life. We know that God created us. We know that Jesus saved us. But you might wonder who the Holy Spirit is.
In John 14:16-17 we see that before Jesus was going to die on the cross, He told the disciples that God would send another Helper to help them. This was the Holy Spirit. Jesus said the Holy Spirit would live with us and be in us. In Acts 2:38, Peter said that when we ask Jesus to be our Savior, the Holy Spirit will be given to us as a gift. Ephesians 1:13 tells us that when we believe in Jesus, we are marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit. These verses show that the Holy Spirit is a special gift to us.

If we think of our spiritual life like an automobile, we know that we have a powerful engine because of our relationship with Jesus, but we need fuel in order to run it. This is where the Holy Spirit is needed. With the help of the Holy Spirit, we are given wisdom to understand what it means to live the Christian life. And as we grow, we live a life that is pleasing to God.

The Holy Spirit is like fuel because He does many things in our lives. In John 14:26, we read that the Holy Spirit will teach us and remind us what the Bible says. Acts 1:8 tells us that the Holy Spirit will give us power to share the Gospel with others. Romans 15:13 shows us that the Holy Spirit will give us joy and peace. 1 Corinthians 2:4 says that the Holy Spirit will give us the wisdom to know what to say when we share about Jesus with others. Galatians 5:22-23 tells us that by following the Spirit in our lives we will have joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:14 says the Holy Spirit will help us keep and share the Gospel message. And Hebrews 2:4 says we have been given the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Sometimes we face roadblocks on our life’s journey. Another thing the Spirit can do is help us get past the things that try to keep us from living a life that is pleasing to God. The Holy Spirit will help us to be humble instead of prideful, we will work together with others instead of fighting, we will seek to do the things that please God instead of disobeying Him, and we will learn to be wise instead of foolish in our daily lives.

The Holy Spirit is a very special kind of fuel. He not only helps us understand what the Bible says, He also helps us to do those things. Now we can see how the Holy Spirit gives us wisdom and energy. The Holy Spirit does a great work inside of us!

We have powerful engines ready to take us on our life’s journey. We have the Bible, our road map for life. But we need the Holy Spirit to fuel us so we can understand how to follow our road maps and help us get past the roadblocks we will encounter. The Holy Spirit gives us the fuel we need to live as we should. Without it, we are on “E” for empty! I’m so thankful that God has given us all we need for a successful life journey.
