The Simplicity of Faith
Another old post. . .
Dennis came downstairs last night after putting Josh to bed. He said that Josh told him he made up a new verse. The verse is, "If you obey God's Word, you'll get His rewards." Josh said this verse was found in the Special Testaments 8:1 (he got the numbers from looking at the digital clock!) I wondered if he had heard this at school or church so I asked him about it this morning. He said he just made it up. Not bad for a preschooler.
Dennis made a point last night as we finished our devotions that there is a theme in Oswald Chambers book, "My Utmost for His Highest", that the Christian life is simple. Oswald Chambers wrote, "How can we maintain the simplicity of Jesus so that we may understand Him? By receiving His Spirit, recognizing and relying on Him, and obeying Him as He brings us the truth of His Word, life will become amazingly simple." As I was thinking about Josh's statement, I have come to feel that a life that is "simple" is a blessing (a reward). What kind of real joy can a person have in life if they are always searching and striving for something better or something more? Our personal relationship with Christ provides all we really need - full access to God who loves us beyond understanding and who provides for our every need.
Then later I read in Matthew 18 where Jesus told the disciples that, "unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven." The plan is simple - humble yourself like a child to accept Christ as Savior. What greater "reward" than being in the Kingdom of Heaven?
It is so neat to see our kids internalizing the truths of the Bible. While I am glad that our children are bright and I desire for them to get a good education, even more important I desire them to have a personal relationship with Jesus and to live to glorify Him.
Psalm 22:30-31 says, "Our children will also serve him. Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord. His righteous acts will be told to those not yet born. They will hear about everything he has done." May God continue to lead us in raising our kids in Him.
