When the Healing Doesn't Come

Tomorrow marks one year since my brother-in-law, Dennis Lucero, Sr., passed away following a long battle with many health complications including stomach cancer. Sunday the 11th, Veterans Day, marks six years since my aunt passed away following her battle with cancer. Both of these people were very special to me and are missed very much.

Unfortunately, disease and death are a part of our fallen world, even for believers in Christ. The Bible teaches that all trials serve a purpose in our lives (James 1:2; 1 Peter 1:6-7). In spite of this, we still wish we didn't have to endure them or see those we love endure them. We pray for healing, hoping it is God's will to allow it this side of heaven. But God's Word tells us that God created us and that all our days were ordained for us and written in His book before we were ever born (Psalm 139:13-16). Sometimes "the healing doesn't come". God may ask us to endure health problems for some time or He may choose to take us to be with Him. Whether we face long-term illnesses or even death, God is still good, faithful, and worthy of praise. He will walk with us through the illness, giving us strength to endure. And should He call us home, we have the promise of being in His presence for eternity if we have sought Christ as our Savior. Those who are left here and also know the Lord have the hope and promise of being reunited with those they have lost.

Kutless has released the song "Even If (The Healing Doesn't Come)". I've heard it on the radio many times in the last week. It seemed timely considering the anniversaries that are approaching for both my and my husband's family. In both of these dear lives, the healing this side of heaven didn't come and we were left to grieve their loss. But I am so thankful that even in the midst of the sadness, we can still praise God for who He is. He is good. He is the faithful One. He's still the great and mighty One. We can still trust Him always because He works all things for our good.

The lives of my aunt and brother-in-law touched many. They left legacies of faith and character for those who remain. I hope all who knew them and will be remembering them this weekend will find comfort in the knowledge that they are with their Lord healthy and praising Him face-to-face. May we honor them by praising the Lord for who He is. And if there are those who have not given their hearts to the Lord, may they consider the hope that was in these dear ones, and submit their lives to Christ as Savior to share in the promise of eternal life.
